Ship History
Construction began on the USS Gladius in the last few months prior to the beginning of conflict with the Cardassian Union. Unfinished, when the Dominion allied themselves with the Cardassians, the Gladius remained as an unfinished spaceframe at the Nesrun Fleet Yards.
When construction resumed, several years later, the spaceframe was found to be incompatible with current technology. Of particular note, changes made to the matter-antimatter reaction assembly required a redesign of the plasma injection system. This resulted in a significant drop off in engine efficiency at high warp speeds and the Engineering team was still trying to overcome this issue two months after the vessels launch.
Following completion of construction, and final outfitting, the Gladius was sent on a shakedown cruise along the Federation/Tzenkethi border under the command of J.T. Cutter with an officer corps fresh out of the Academy and an enlisted crew preparing for their retirement. This cruise was interrupted by destruction of the USS Itasca at Tanner's World and the Gladius responded to provide support to less heavily-armed vessels performing recovery operations.
Gladius' first mission was a far cry from the "long shakedown - followed by, maybe, a tour of the inner systems" that her Commanding Officer had been expecting.
