Ship's History

The USS Dakota was built in 2347 at the Copernicus Fleet Yards and was placed under the command of Elizabeth Grant; and assigned to the Seventh Fleet which was to patrol the trading lanes and escort convoys along the Romulan Neutral Zone. In 2349 the Federation Council issued a command that the Federation must expand their territory, and it was therefore issued that a new starbase would be constructed along the outer edges of the Federation in the Alpha Quadrant. The USS Dakota was assigned to Project Watch-Dog which was under the command of Vice Admiral Edwin Sumner V; and Captain Grant was assigned as second in command of the nine ship task force that was placed on guard duty while the starbase was under construction. During that year, the Dakota was left protecting the half completed hull of the starbase along with the USS Victory and USS Richmond while the remaining ships escorted a convoy of supplies to the base. The Orion Syndicate launched a surprise attack to destroy the hull, and after a one hour battle, the Orions withdrew with moderate losses while the three starships suffered only minimal damage. Captain Grant and the crew of the Dakota were awarded a Starfleet Command Letter of Commendation along with the nickname "Defiant to the Last."

In 2351, after two years of serving on Project Watch-Dog, the Dakota was reassigned along the Klingon border to patrol for pirate ships attacking Federation space lanes. Three months into the patrol, the USS Dakota encountered two Klingon Birds of Prey and an old D-7 class battle cruiser attacking three Federation colony vessels within Federation territory. The Klingon task force was a part of a faction that was seeking to destroy the current peace talks between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in an attempt to start a war and conquer the Federation rather than make peace with them. Captain Grant desperately tried her best to use diplomacy to stop the attacks. Unfortunately, diplomacy failed when the Klingons destroyed one of the colony ships, killing over 1,000 Federation lives within seconds. Seeing that peace was no longer an option, Captain Grant led the Dakota into a desperate fight to save the remaining two colony ships.

Ten minutes into the battle, the USS Richmond arrived to assist the Dakota and the two ships continued to defend the damaged colony ships, destroying the D7 and both Birds of Prey. Captain Grant was critically wounded during the last two minutes of the battle; and handed command over to her first officer, Commander Davenport. Four days later, while en route to the Copernicus Fleet Yards for repairs, Captain Grant died from her injuries along with twenty three additional officers and crew. This battle was a defining moment for Starfleet: it proved that Starfleet and the Federation was committed to having peaceful relations with the Klingon Empire

After three months in dry-dock, the Dakota relaunched in 2352 under the command of Captain Charlie Davenport, former Executive Officer under the late Captain Grant. The Dakota was reassigned to the Third Fleet to begin border patrols along the Cardassian-Federation border. By 2353 the Dakota had been in five different engagements with Cardassian forces, which no doubt were testing the defenses of the Federation forces.

The Dakota, under the command of Captain Davenport, fought bravely during the Federation-Cardassian War. At the end of the war, the USS Dakota underwent her first major refit at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards. In 2360, The Dakota was reassigned to the Third Fleet which continued patrolling the Cardassian border until 2364, still skirmishing with Cardassian vessels occasionally.

In 2365 the Dakota was reassigned to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone as Romulan activity across the zone started to rise; so Starfleet Command decided to shift a third of its fleet to the Neutral Zone.

In 2367 the Dakota was patrolling the Neutral Zone when long range sensors picked up a freighter entering the zone and Captain Davenport ordered a pursuit course to stop the freighter from crossing into the zone. Upon approaching the freighter, it opened fire onto the Dakota, slightly damaging her shields. Captain Davenport followed the freighter into the neutral zone and a Romulan light cruiser decloaked and immediately opened fire upon the Dakota, trying to allow the freighter to escape across into Romulan territory. The Dakota managed to disable the freighter’s engines and send over a boarding party to capture the freighter. After fifteen minutes of fighting, the freighter's warp engines came online and the away team proceeded back to Federation space with the Dakota protecting its retreat. The battle ended in a draw for both ships, but classified documents and fleet movements were found within the freighter that would have been given to the Romulan Empire.

In 2369, the USS Dakota was ordered to survey a system outside of Federation and Romulan territory; where it came across a Romulan light cruiser, the same one it encountered four years ago in the neutral zone. The Romulan commander was seeking revenge and attacked the Dakota as the space was neutral territory; after ten minutes of fighting the Dakota scored a lucky hit that forced the Romulan ship to withdraw. Later that year, the Federation constructed a military observation post within that system and further stretched the Romulan Federation Neutral Zone and the push for war against each other.

In 2370, Captain Davenport was promoted to Rear Admiral and transferred to the Second Fleet, while the Dakota was transferred to the Seventh Fleet and placed under the command of Captain Beverly Franklin, which remained along the Romulan border for six months before being transferred once again to the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone.

In 2372, the Dakota was involved during the brief Klingon-Federation war, sustaining heavy damage during the first push by the Klingon Empire, but managed to repair her battle damage within three weeks to appear at the Battle for Ganalda IV, helping to turn the tide in the battle. The Dakota was then ordered to patrol Ajilon Prime and took part of the fighting in space and landing defensive troops for the battle. A few days later, the cease-fire was reinstated and a war brought to an end.

In 2373, the USS Dakota participated in the Battle of Torros III, where the Dominion shipyards were destroyed. However in 2374, the USS Dakota was one of twelve ships that survived the Battle of Tyra in which Captain Franklin lost 32 percent of her crew and four senior officers, including her Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander John Benson.

After three weeks of repairs, she was deployed again along the front lines and took part in several engagements including participating Operation Return and was present during the raid on Earth.

In 2376, after assisting in cleaning up resistant Dominion cells, the USS Dakota was decommissioned until 2380. The Dakota was upgraded with her second major refit and placed under the command of Captain Rembrandt Devereux.

In 2388, The Dakota was taken out of active service for the final time. After suffering major battle damage in which the crew had to abandon the Dakota, she was towed back to Copernicus Fleet Yards where she underwent repairs. Close to the completion of the repairs, the Dakota was almost mothballed but after some talks between Starfleet Command and the Dakota's last Commanding Officer, William Harris, it was decided that the Dakota would be turned into a travelling museum ship.
