Family history
A family of doctors, nurses, and mental health practitioners, the Spears have always been the first ones to raise a hand when asked who wants to help. None of them have ever been afraid of taking on responsibility or accepting a challenge. Edward was definitely not the first or last in the family to get his medical degree. He may not have finished top in the class, but he always got points for putting every fiber of his being into his work. His father was a surgeon aboard a Starfleet medical ship, and so Edward was no stranger to space travel growing up. His mother was a well respected nurse in the civilian world, and she has traveled to many planets on UFP aid missions as a senior field nurse. Both his parents are now retired. Edward's family knew space travel could be hard on a kid growing up which is why he spent his first ten years of his life on Earth, in Newfoundland. St. John's was the home town of Edward's father, and his mother really liked the city. Even in the 24th century it managed to maintain some of its rustic appeal. The Spears' family home is located on the outskirts of the city, and has much more of a rural feel to it. The home sports a small vineyard and vegetable garden out back, both of which serve as a hobby to the family when they are home. Edward's sister, Christina, is younger, and currently trained in physical therapy. She joined Starfleet on the day of her graduation from university, and is now posted aboard the USS Westminster as a Physical Therapy Officer. Because his father and mother retired, the Spears' family home on Earth still boasts warm hospitality year round. The home has always been open to all members of the family. Edward married when he was 25. He met his wife, Abigail at medical school. The two of them found common ground in their medical practice, however Abigail was not dreaming of joining Starfleet. She opted to remain on Earth for her residency while her husband went on to Starfleet's medical officer training program. Abigail found out the hard way that having a husband away in space can put a tremendous strain on a relationship. She met another man while working on Earth, and filed for a divorce while Ed was away on his first mission with the USS Broadsword.
Education
Edward did not join Starfleet as soon as he was able like many applicants. He waited until he had finished his training in medical school on Earth before putting his application in for the direct entry Medical Officer Training Program. He was greeted into the program with open arms by Starfleet medical after excellent reviews from his professors and from the doctor under which he had completed two of his residence years. After his basic officer training he went on to carry on with his residence in San Francisco, quite a ways from his home town, but not as far as he was going to travel. After his initial Starfleet residency he was finally able to be posted to a ship, where he would be able to finish his residence, and perform his written and practical exams to qualify him for his MD. Ed was exposed to a rapid introduction to combat surgery during his first mission. After the ship returned to its home port, Ed's supervisor decided that his experiences on the ship qualified him to become a fully qualified medical doctor.

Since his initial licensing and qualifications on the Broadsword, Ed has become a respected and qualified surgeon, much like his father. He is recognized by the Starfleet Medical College of Surgeons and Specialists, and has been recognized for his expertise in reconstructive surgery of battlefield wounds.
Medical profile
Edward was born with Kleinfelter's Syndrome, a genetic disorder which meant his body was born with an additional X chromosome. Gene therapy corrected the issue and he developed normally. Even after the therapy, Edward developed a pre-disposition towards other genetic disorders that could occur later in life ranging from mild treatable ones, to life threatening complications. Edward takes medication monthly in order to reduce his risk factor at developing these complications. So far he has lived a normal, healthy life.

"Assimilation is complete..."

The website and the ODN are no longer separate entities. No jumping from one site to the other to get information. We have added to our technological distinctiveness to become one. The process of rebuilding the front-end is still ongoing. Making "a" website... that's easy. Making a website that uses all our content over decades... that's hard.
