Family history
Her parents were part of a ruthless Romulan house with high aspirations. Both were killed by political enemies (her father when she was 12, her mother when she was 19). At the age of 15, she was recruited into the Tal Shiar, but upon learning disturbing information about her family history, Anina defected to the Federation at the age of 19 and was given amnesty in exchange for critical political information. Under careful scrutiny, she was allowed to join Starfleet Academy...but is still considered to bear watching.
Her mother was half Bajoran, but rejected her Bajoran heritage, as did Anina.
While aboard the Vienna, Anina was reunited with her former Tal Shiar handler and lover, Sub Commander Galan Lhaes. At the time of their reunion, he was undercover as Herin Reev, a Betazoid medical researcher. During a battle with a pirate ship, a group of Orions beamed into the children's safe room. Galan blew his cover protecting the children, and subsequently made his intention to defect official. It was revealed shortly thereafter that Anina was pregnant with their first child, a daughter.

Anina suffered from two broken ribs and a punctured lung as a result of torture by SFI during this visit. Dr. Christine Bakers of SFI Medical repaired the damage, and there are no lasting effects.
PSYCHOLOGICAL: Anina was raised and trained in the ruthless political environment of Romulus and the Tal Shiar. She is trained to lie, although she often appears sincere, even to trained telepathic counselors. At the same time, she is reluctant to divulge her past. The Federation has deemed her defection and intent satisfactory, and her unique skill and knowledge set potentially useful to Starfleet. She has excelled in all areas at Starfleet Academy, and has shown no signs of disloyalty to the Federation, but counselors are advised to keep a close eye on her all the same.

Pointed ears; 2 Bajoran nose ridges. Has arched eyebrows but not the heavy brow ridges associated with full-blooded Romulans. Does not wear the traditional Bajoran earring. On the center of her lower back, she has a tattoo of the emblem of the Romulan Star Empire.
