Mierta is an un-joined trill, a reject of the Trill host program. This troubles him deeply and he is constantly trying to prove his worth to himself, his shipmates and the Trill host program in hopes of someday being readmited. His entire reason for joining StarFleet was to make his mark in the Galaxy.
Mierta has a long and distinguished career in StarFleet. He began his service as a tactical officer on the USS Minotaur where he proved a valuable member of the crew, eventually rising to Chief Tactical Officer.
Because of his skills and abilities he was recruited to join the StarFleet Cover Ops unit PRISM: Team Vanguard as XO, eventually becoming the units Commanding Officer. With the change in socio-political realities in the Federation, Team Vanguard was decommissioned in StarDate 11102.01. Mierta remained on activity duty, working deep cover assignments that remain classified at this time.
On StarDate 11701.01 he was released from Special OPs and given clearance to resume normal StarFleet service and he joined the USS Tomahawk as her Chief Tactical Officer, with the understanding that his time with Team Vanguard and the interim assignments are still under the highest of Top Secret classification.
Because Trills are normally referred to by a combined name that reflects the host and the symbiont, Mierta uses only one name.
