Family history
Mikal’s parents, Dr. David Trisklia and Diana Luchena, were wed on Betazed, the product of an arranged marriage. They took the family name Luchena in honour of the distinguished history of the matriarchal line. When Dr. Luchena was offered a position teaching and conducting research at Starfleet Academy, the family moved to San Francisco, Earth. Diana was carrying their eldest child, and Luna was born within weeks of their arrival. Three years later Mikal was born.
Dr. Luchena's research took him far afield. Diana, left alone with young children much of the time, failed to establish social connections, and became withdrawn and somewhat odd in her behaviour. When Luna was 7 and Mikal 4, they returned home from school to find their mother's body. This event was to have a profound impact on both the children. They were raised by a series of housekeepers, bolstered by the occasional visit from their father. Mikal took refuge in music and was somewhat of a prodigy, able to pick up any instrument and coax melody and harmony from it. Luna took refuge in taking on responsibility for her brother's welfare and running the household.
In his late teens and as a result of a growing estrangement from his father whom he blamed for his mother’s death, he left Earth for Betazoid, where his talent as a composer and musician was encouraged and nurtured by the government. As he began to gain recognition and a modest amount of fame, he fell into numerous addictions. His career fizzled while he gorged himself on sensory delights. In retrospect he knew that was how he dealt with his fear, anger and profound sense of loss. The irony was that his losses continued to grow as a result of what he used, but he could not see it at the time.
A personal crisis made him realize that drastic changes were needed if he wanted to live. He vowed to quit his self-destructive habits and reinvent himself. He needed exposure to new cultures, different ways of thinking, and different worlds to adapt to, in order to feed his creativity.
It was his sister's recounting of her adventures in Starfleet that first put the idea in his head. She tried very thoroughly to talk him out of it, citing the self-discipline and authoritarian structure as being against his very nature. But once he had made the decision, she had been behind him completely, despite her occasional jokes that soon both Luchena siblings would be fugitives from Starfleet.

Education
His marks at the academy were abysmal. He barely scrapped by in all his required courses. If it hadn't been for one instructor who recognized his talent in his chosen field, he would have been kicked out before the end of his second year. But as it was, his sensitivity as an artist gave him a gift for counselling, and so Starfleet took the risk and assigned him to active duty despite a psychological profile that labelled his an “unstable personality”.

EXCERPTS FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF CADET LUCHENA
“This cadet repeatedly finds himself in conflict with authority figures, particularly men, no doubt a re-working of the factors behind his estrangement from his father. He has also been observed involved in a series of intense, but emotionally shallow relationships with female cadets. He does not appear capable of forming an emotional bond with members of the opposite sex.
One might speculate that this behaviour is a result of losing his mother at a very early age. While outwardly, he blames his father, as a child he no doubt blamed himself. At an unconscious level he likely has a deeply rooted fear of “killing” anyone he loves. Thus he remains emotionally distant, and repeatedly subjects himself to further abandonment experiences. He remains resistant to exploring this hypothesis in psychotherapy, or even acknowledging that the experience of losing his mother has any affect whatsoever on him as an adult.
Given the level of his denial, he is likely to persist in self-defeating behaviour patterns, and remains at risk for substance abuse relapse.”
