Gavin's father was very young when he met his mother, and was born while they were much younger than would be considered typical for families on either Earth or Betazed. As a result of the stigma, his mother abandoned them shortly after his birth, and Gavin spent most of his time under the care of his paternal grandparents.
His grandfather had been a shuttle pilot in Starfleet and continued this as a hobby well after assuming care of Gavin. Gavin displayed a natural aptitude for piloting and his grandfather was keen to nurture this talent into real skill.
His grandmother was well researched in matter/antimatter physics and carried a teaching position at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
His father led a somewhat hard life, a fact that his grandparents often blamed themselves for. In spite of this, they aspired to do right by Gavin and avoid making what they perceived to be mistakes from "the first time around".

Education
Due in no small part to his careful tutelage as a young child, Gavin excelled in early school and was quickly placed ahead in classes of older students. He was able to complete a standard high school course of study early in three years, and graduated by age 14.
He was subsequently accepted into Starfleet academy as part of a fast-track program for gifted youth, where he displayed tremendous proficiency in the fields of physics and flight control; he served on Nova Squadron for the last three years of his curriculum at the academy, and was granted a commission at the earliest age possible for admission into the Officer Corps.

Medical profile
Gavin suffered from a period of Iresine Syndrome during early adolescence. He subsequently developed a severe allergic reaction to proteins found in peanuts, as well as similar proteins from extra-terrestrial flora.
