Little A.J. was found on the doorstep of the Horga'hn's Children Foundling Home on Risa. The rags in which he was wrapped bore the letters "Aj" at the edge. Presumably the first part of a word starting in Aj. For lake of any further ID, the young boy was called "A. J." He was about 9 months old at he time.
At 3 yrs. A. J. was adopted by Giles Kirkbride, a retired Starfleet Counselor, and survivor of Wolf 359.
Kirkbride, a widower, raised A. J. (now called Andrew James) as he would have his own son whom he lost in the imfamous battle. Andy was raised in Kirkbride's home on the pleasure planet Risa.
It was Giles who eventually sponsored Andy's application to Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. Giles hopes that A.J. will follow in his footsteps and become a great psychologist, though he has shown no interest in this particular field.
Though it would be theoretically possible for someone with access to the Federation Genetic Databases to run a match on his DNA to search for his parentage, Andy has never applied for such a search.

He scored high enough on his entrance exams to be admitted in spite of this.
He is currently in his third year at the Academy.

His mixed and mysterious heritage make his biology a bit tricky to sort out at times. Internally, though his blood is red, his organs are more characteristic of Vulcan physiology.

Vulcan traits are surprizingly recessive. Externally, only slightly arching eybrows and pointed ears give evidence of the Vulcan genetic contribution. A strange birth-mark in the shape of a crescent or a sickle on his left scapula.
