Family history
Having grown up on Risa, Varesh is by nature a friendly and open person, he makes friends very easily.
His teenage years was a trial for him, since he could not learn to shield from people's thoughts properly, having only then started to manifest telepathy. His training was provided by a woman he met at the market - one who could provide him with the discipline he needed to fully come into his abilities.
After meeting the Scorpius crew when they were there on shore leave, he was inspired by the idea to join Star Fleet. Despite his mother's opposition, he entered the Academy with the full intention of becoming a counselor, but decided to diversify into other areas of study as well.
He completed his degree in general medicine and psychology whilst at the Academy in San Francisco. The administration thought, quite correctly, that he could handle the work load of Academy and University at the same time. Two doctorates stood him in good stead when Starfleet was looking at personnel for assignment.
He has served on a variety of ships (the Huron, Scimitar, Nighthawk and Andromeda) which honed his command skills. He's made friends, found love and lost both. Now he's moving on to a ship he's never served on, with an addition to his family that he never though would happen.
