Family history
Randi McIntyre was born on Betazed to two SF scientists (archeologists), who were also born on Betazed. Randi was raised with Betazed traditions. It was discovered at an early age, that Randi had the IQ of 203, rated by Earth standards. Her parents accelerated her education in all areas. She was taught martial arts, weapons, and piloting along with the mental training of Betazed which as they also discovered, she had with one of the highest esper ratings that could be tested. It is rare that a Betazed is fully functioning mentally at birth, but it seemed that Randi was one of those, hence the lack of physical and mental contact with masses of people. She was under constant supervision of her mental faculties with one the most knowledgeable instructors on Betazed, as it was a very real danger that she could become "insane" with all the mental voices that bombarded her. She was trained to mute the voices but was told there would always be a "mental hum" in her head and would be worse the more people that were in her vacinity.
By the age of ten, Randi had completed all her college courses with a degree in medicine (Licensed Doctor), counseling, archeology, shuttle pilot. At this time, her parents took her with them,
traveling much of the Federation territories along with her trainer to continue her practice of mental disciplines. She had little contact with children her age... nor did her parents notice that she was lacking in normal social skills due to not being around others.
On one of their rare visits back to Betazed, they left Randi, now age 14, with Admiral Hewitt, a distant cousin, until their return from a newly discovered excavation site. On this trip, their shuttle malfunctioned and both of Randi's parents were killed along
with her trainer who had been her friend as well. Admiral Hewitt, not knowing what to do with a 14 year old, sent Randi to stay with his daughter, Jennifer Hewitt on the USS Huron,
as a companion for her twins. Being a typical teenager, Randi found herself surrounded by admiring males. She chafed at the restrictions that were place on her by Jennifer Hewitt, and found herself in trouble many times with the crew.
Admiral Skyler in an attempt to rein Randi in, received permission to enlist Randi as a cadet, with her training to be aboard the Huron. Randi did not like the restrictions placed on her as she had no decision of becoming a cadet. During her cadet training, she became licensed to pilot a starship. With her medical degree, she also helped in sickbay. Varresh who was counselor on the ship was her legal guardian. She was mentored by the Captains of the Huron, then was sent to Earth to help teach graduating cadets about life on a starship. Unknowing to her, she was actually completing her final tests to become an ensign. Returning to the Huron, she was then told by Admiral Skyler that she had graduated and was now Ensign Randi McIntyre. She started at the tactical position under the tutelage of Tio Ayidee. When Varesh was assigned to another ship, she took over his position as ship's counselor. She stayed in that position until an unfortunate trip to the Delta quadrant taxed her good humor and the realization she might never return home again. When the Huron returned, she resigned her commission for a much needed rest.
